A review of the presentation Working with Change Managers and SMEs by Gary Calwell.
A big thanks to presenter Gary Calwell whose insight and experience helped us understand how technical writers can work more effectively in change management situations.
We learned that a change manager is not so different from a technical writer – both are agents of transformation and (usually) improvement. We discussed how we need to make sure change managers and SMEs know what we can do and how we can help as technical writers (no, we are not just spell-checkers or formatters). It is more and more part of our role to make our value known and be proactive in engaging at the level of content, structure and strategy during projects. We can also help SMEs and managers articulate the ‘problems now’, in order to help them articulate how to ‘make things better’. Essentially, technical writers play a critical role in change management, where the right communication can be the difference between success and failure.
