Abelard Consulting

Abelard Consulting provides workshops in technical writing, technical report writing and scientific writing. Public courses are held regularly in most capital cities. Corporate workshops are also available. These can be tailored and then delivered anywhere in Australia.

ACS Distance Education

ACS Distance Education offers a Technical Writing (Advanced) course, which involves 100 hours of study and covers style, planning, collaborative writing, and writing project reports.

ARA Institute of Canterbury

The Cherryleaf online Technical author basic/induction training course covers the technical documentation process and describes the skills you need in order to be a successful technical writer or technical author. Created by the authors of the popular 'How to Write Instructions' book, and developed in conjunction with some of the leading technology companies in the UK, this 14-module course explains the technical communicator's role in today's environment.


Contented offers online courses in plain English and business writing for the web, including web accessibility, technical writing and social media courses.

Eston Training

ESTON Training offers a course in technical/commercial authorship and provides proven, technical and commercial, distance learning writing courses that teach you the skills necessary for a new career as a technical, commercial or software author. The writing courses offer first-class training for a second career, with a two-part training program.

Humber College (Canada)

Humber College offers a Technical Writing Certificate through distance education. The program teaches practical skills such as writing well-organised material, estimating contracts and jobs, and developing effective training courses. Humber's courses are taught by senior-level technical writers who know what is expected in the field, and who will guide you from the basics to expert-level writing. Each course in the online program has a critical-path agenda to follow to meet assignment and quiz deadlines. Students work at their own pace during the week, and are required to participate in a weekly one-hour, live-chat session on the specified scheduled date (held in the evening from either 7 to 8 pm or 8 to 9 pm Canadian Eastern Standard Time). Students should also be prepared to spend an additional 2 to 6 hours each week on readings and assignments.

Information Mapping

Information Mapping provides training in the Information Mapping method for structured authoring and business communication. Public and private classroom courses and online training options are available, as well as self-paced video courses. Training leads to international certification by exam and includes Mastering Policies, Procedures and Documentation (introduction for technical writers), Mastering Business Communication, and Information Mapping Foundation (included in all Master courses) - enrol in one of the Training Roadshow courses in your city.


LearningCloud offers short courses and diploma/certificate awards covering subject areas in writing and journalism, information technology, business and management, education and teaching, and art and design software. E-learning materials use rich multimedia and interactive self-tests that can be used on any device.

MIT is offering a free technical writing course. Go to MIT OpenCourseWare and search for 'technical writing' and 'technical communication'.

MCI Solutions

MCI Solutions offers elearning courses and classroom workshops in structured writing, report and proposal writing, presentation skills, project management, and Microsoft Office and Adobe software.

Open Polytechnic (New Zealand)

The Professional and Technical Writing course is delivered online and covers the principles and processes of writing effectively and targeting specific audiences. Students develop competence in preparing and presenting documents for a wide range of readers in a variety of business situations.

SAI Global

SAI Global offers training in standards, management systems, and business improvement. The following public training courses may be of interest to technical communicators: Process Mapping, Business Continuity Management, Six Sigma and Documenting a Management System.

Simon Fraser University (Canada)

In Simon Fraser University's part-time, online Technical Communication Certificate, you'll master key technical communication skills such as technical writing and editing, research analysis, information design, indexing, documentation project management, online documentation, desktop publishing applications and more. The certificate is entirely online, and you'll engage in online discussions throughout each course.

Society for Technical Communication (STC)

STC's recorded seminars are recordings of all STC live webinars. A recording of each webinar is posted 30 days after the original presentation date. A diverse range of practical, cutting-edge topics for technical communicators is presented each month in STC's live seminars. To participate in a seminar, you must be able to access Adobe Connect, STC's online meeting space. STC offers multiple online courses where participants can earn a certificate of successful completion. These courses let you explore a subject in depth over the course of several weeks. In addition to the practical work skills that you will develop, participating in a certificate program provides you with a unique, live opportunity to learn directly from an instructor and to also exchange ideas and tools virtually with the other participants in the program.

University of Queensland

The University of Queensland's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences offers writing, editing and publishing courses-a postgraduate Certificate in Arts, Diploma in Arts or a Master of Arts in Writing, Editing and Publishing.

University of Southern Queensland

University of Southern Queensland offers a Graduate Certificate of Editing and Publishing (online only) and a Master of Arts (Editing and Publishing).

University of Technology, Sydney
